วิธี Downgrade Windows Server Datacenter เป็น Standard Edition

ตอนวิเคราะห์ Server Licenses ใน Corporate Network (มี KMS Server Deployed) พบว่า Windows Server Datacenter Edition ที่แพงกว่าติดตั้งบน Host หนึ่ง แต่ Server ไม่ได้ใช้ Datacenter Features เช่น Virtualization, S2D, Azure Stack, Storage Replica ฯลฯ จึงมีไอเดียเปลี่ยน (Downgrade) Windows Server 2016 Datacenter เป็น Standard Edition เพื่อประหยัดค่าใช้จ่าย ไม่พิจารณา Clean Reinstall Windows Server เพราะ Roles บางตัว Configured แล้ว และ Additional Software ที่มี Hardware-related Licenses ติดตั้งอยู่บน Server

สำคัญ! Microsoft ไม่ Support Downgrade Windows Server Edition รุ่นสูงกว่าเป็นรุ่นต่ำกว่าอย่างเป็นทางการ วิธีที่แนะนำอย่างเป็นทางการคือ Clean OS Installation ดังนั้นทำตามขั้นตอนด้านล่างด้วยความเสี่ยงของตัวเอง

แนะนำให้ Backup OS Image ก่อน Downgrade อย่างน้อยผ่าน Windows Server Backup

ระวังมากเมื่อ Downgrade Windows Server ที่มี ADDS Domain Controller Role ติดตั้ง ควร Transfer FSMO Roles และ Demote จาก DC เป็น Domain-member Server ก่อน (Backup DC ก่อนทำ ถ้ามี Issue Restore DC จาก Backup ได้)

  1. บน Windows Server 2016 Datacenter ที่รันอยู่ เปิด Registry Editor ไป Key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion
  2. ตรวจสอบค่า REG_SZ Parameters: EditionID = ServerDatacenter, ProductName = Windows Server 2016 Datacenter
  3. เปลี่ยนค่า: EditionID → ServerStandard, ProductName → Windows Server 2016 Standard
  4. ปิด regedit.exe
  5. Mount Windows Server 2016 ISO Image รัน Setup Wizard (setup.exe)
  6. ตอนเลือก Install Options ใน Windows Server Setup Window เลือก Upgrade และ Windows Server 2016 Standard (Desktop Experience) Edition
  7. ติ๊ก Option Keep personal files and apps (หาก Option นี้ไม่พร้อมใช้งาน ข้อความ "You can't keep Windows settings, personal files, and apps because your current version of Windows might be installed in a unsupported directory" ดูโพสต์ต่อไป)
  8. คลิก Confirm สำหรับ Items ที่เจอ ตัวอย่าง Item แรกว่า Upgrade Windows Server ไม่แนะนำ ควร Clean Install OS Item ที่สองว่า PnP และ RemoteFX USB Device Redirection Disabled By Default ใน Windows Version นี้
  9. เริ่ม Windows Server Update รอจนเสร็จหลายครั้ง Restart ตรวจสอบว่า Windows 2016 Standard Edition รันบน Host แล้ว

Downgrade Method นี้ควรทำงานกับ Windows Server Versions ที่รองรับทั้งหมด (2012R2/2016/2019) ยังใช้ Downgrade และ Upgrade Version ได้ เช่นจาก Windows Server 2012 R2 Datacenter เป็น Windows Server 2019 Standard (แม้ไม่แนะนำ)
