GPT Partition เป็น standard สำหรับ layout ของ partition table บน physical hard disk ใช้ Globally Unique Identifiers MBRMaster Boot Record MBR disks คือ disks ที่มี sectors ต่างๆ เก็บ boot data Sector แรก ที่เริ่มต้นของ disk มีข้อมูลเกี่ยวกับ disk และ partitions สำหรับ OS ใช้ แต่ MBR disks มี limitations และคอมพิวเตอร์รุ่นใหม่ๆ กำลังเปลี่ยนไปใช้ GPT disks
ข้อจำกัดของ MBR Disk
MBR formatted disk สามารถมี primary partitions ได้สูงสุด 4 partitions และจัดการข้อมูล ได้สูงสุด 2TB เท่านั้น ด้วยความต้องการ storage เพิ่มขึ้น GPT (GUID Partition Table) disks จึงขายพร้อมคอมพิวเตอร์ใหม่ ที่ address storage มากกว่า 2TB MBR disks สำหรับ sector แรกของ disk ไว้เก็บข้อมูลเกี่ยวกับ disk partitions และตำแหน่ง OS files
กล่าวอีกนัยหนึ่ง firmware และ operating systems ขึ้นอยู่กับ sector แรกนี้สำหรับการทำงานของ disk ถ้า MBR corrupt อาจสูญเสียการเข้าถึงข้อมูลบน disk
ในกรณี GPT disks ข้อมูล disk ถูก replicate มากกว่า 1 ครั้ง ดังนั้น disk ยังทำงานได้แม้ sector แรก corrupt GPT disk สามารถมี primary partitions ได้สูงสุด 128 partitions
Legacy operating systems อาจไม่รองรับ GPT disks แต่เกือบทุก current operating systems จาก Windows XP 64-bit ถึง Windows 8.1 รองรับการใช้ GPT disks
MBR Disk vs. GPT Disks
จุดเปรียบเทียบหลักระหว่าง MBR Disk และ GPT Disk:
- MBR disk มีได้สูงสุด 4 primary partitions ในขณะที่ GPT disks มีได้สูงสุด 128 primary partitions
- หากต้องการ partition มากกว่า 4 บน MBR ต้องสร้าง extended partition แล้วค่อยสร้าง logical partitions ส่วน GPT disks ไม่มีข้อบังคับนี้
- Sector แรกและ sector แรกเพียงอย่างเดียวของ MBR disks เก็บข้อมูล hard disk ส่วน GPT disks ข้อมูล hard disk และ partitions ถูก replicate มากกว่า 1 ครั้ง ทำงานได้แม้ sector แรก corrupt
- MBR disk จัดการ disk มากกว่า 2TB ไม่ได้ ส่วน GPT disks ไม่มีข้อจำกัดนี้
- ทุก OS รองรับ MBR disks ส่วน GTP รองรับเฉพาะ Windows XP 64 bit และ Windows versions ต่อไป
- สำหรับ boot support Windows 8 รองรับ 32-bit booting เท่านั้น Windows 7, Vista, XP 32-bit versions ไม่สามารถ boot จาก GPT disks ได้

วิธี Convert GPT Disk เป็น MBR Disk
เพื่อ convert GPT disk เป็น MBR ต้องลบ partitions ทั้งหมดก่อน ก่อนทำอย่างนั้น ต้อง backup ข้อมูลทั้งหมดจาก disk ไป disk หรือ storage media อื่น สามารถ backup ด้วย third-party tools หรือ Windows Backup Tool
ไป Control Panel จาก Administrative Tools เลือก Computer Management จาก window ที่ปรากฏ เลือก Disk Management ใน window ที่แสดง disks และ partitions ด้านขวา คลิกขวาเลือก delete สำหรับแต่ละ partition ของ disk ที่ต้องการ convert เป็น MBR
หลังลบ partitions ทั้งหมด จะเหลือ disk เดียวทั้งดิสก์ (แสดงเป็น chunk ไม่แบ่งใน Disk Management) คลิกขวาที่ disk นี้ เลือก "Convert to MBR disk" จะใช้เวลาสักครู่ก่อน Windows convert disk เป็น MBR และ format ให้ใช้งานได้
ตอนนี้สร้าง partitions ด้วยคำสั่ง Shrink Disk ปกติ หรือ third-party partition manager ฟรี เช่น EaseUS Partition Tool หรือ Aomei Partition Assistant สำหรับอ่านรายละเอียด ดูบทความ how to convert MBR to GPT Disk without data loss
อาจต้อง convert เป็น MBR หากต้องใช้ 32-bit Windows OS บนคอมพิวเตอร์ วิธีที่ดีคือใช้ 2 disks หนึ่ง MBR สำหรับ boot (system disk) อีกอัน GPT สำหรับ storage แต่ถ้ามี disk เดียว convert เป็น MBR ไม่งั้นอาจ boot ไม่ได้หลังติดตั้ง Windows 7 32 bit โปรดระวัง
