DISM tool แทนที่ Package Manager (pkgmgr.exe), PEimg, Intlcfg ที่ใช้กับ Windows Vista DISM รวมฟังก์ชันทั้ง 3 ตัว พร้อมฟังก์ชันใหม่ปรับปรุง offline servicing

ใน Windows 10/8 ได้ฟังก์ชันเพิ่มเติม

ใช้ DISM เพื่อ:

1. Add, remove, enumerate packages และ drivers
2. Enable/disable Windows features
3. Apply changes จาก offline servicing section ของ unattend.xml answer file
4. Configure international settings
5. Upgrade Windows image เป็น edition อื่น
6. เตรียม Windows PE image
7. Logging ที่ดีขึ้น
8. Service down-level OS เช่น Windows Vista SP1 และ Windows Server 2008
9. Service ทุก platform (32-bit, 64-bit, Itanium)
10. Service 32-bit image จาก 64-bit host และ 64-bit image จาก 32-bit host
11. ใช้ Package Manager scripts เก่าได้
