สำหรับผู้ที่ wonder uMatrix คือ point-and-click matrix-based privacy tool เป็น Web extension สำหรับ Firefox และ Chrome ใช้ควบคุมว่า domains ทำอะไรได้ขณะ browse โดยหลักคล้าย NoScript แต่ focus ไม่ใช่ specifically blocking scripts
หลังเขียน tutorial ใช้ NoScript 10 WebExtension ใหม่ ผมอยากทำ uMatrix เหมือนกัน เหตุหลัก: 1) กำลังเช็คว่า add-on นี้ merit further use หรือ backup/alternative หาก NoScript มีปัญหาหลัง migration WebExtensions 2) usage model ไม่ straightforward มาดู uMatrix ทำอะไรได้บ้าง และอย่างไร
Setup & Overview
Grab extension ติดตั้ง - ทดสอบกับ Firefox แต่หลักการเดียวกัน Chrome ติดตั้งแล้ว จะเห็น gray rectangle icon ใน browser bar คลิก แล้วกด cogwheel 小小 มุมซ้ายบน หรือผ่าน extensions menu เข้า preferences
Options
ติดตั้งแล้ว ก่อน browse เปิด extensions settings menu ต้องไปดู features และทำ changes บ้าง มี 4 tabs
Under Settings เปลี่ยน font size และ cosmetic changes อื่นๆ ไม่สำคัญมากตอนนี้ Tab ที่สอง Privacy น่าสนใจกว่า
By default uMatrix clear browser cache ทุก 60 นาที - option นี้ checked default ตัดสินใจเองว่าอยากหรือต้องการ ผมคิด unnecessary overkill แล้ว purge local content stored by websites ที่อยากบล็อก spoof HTTP referrer และ user agent string และ forbid insecure content บน HTTPS connections เช่น images จาก HTTP
โดยรวม options เหล่านี้ tricky เพราะ inherently change browser behavior อาจ affect servers เห็น browser และ serve content ยังไง play และ test ได้ แต่สำหรับคนที่มี heightened sense of security
My rules น่าสนใจกว่า ด้านซ้าย permanent rules ขวา temporary export/commit ทั้งสองทาง edit temp set กด Edit ใช้ right pane เหมือน text editor add/delete lines ตามใจ save และ commit rules ไป permanent set ถ้าพอใจ
ต้องใช้ uMatrix syntax ใช้เวลาคุยนิดหน่อย สำคัญที่สุด หากอยากใช้ extension นี้ block scripts ควร delete default rules ที่ allow 1st-level domains by default
ใน screenshot ข้างต้น มันหายไปแล้ว Set จะประมาณนี้:
* 1st-party * allow
* 1st-party frame allow
ลบสองบรรทัดสุดท้ายใน temp set save แล้ว commit - จะทำให้ uMatrix deny scripts สำหรับ all by default
Tab สุดท้าย allow se Hosts files หยุด browser connect ไป blacklisted hostfiles มาพร้อม overhead และ penalty ใช้ได้ ไม่คิดว่าจำเป็นหรือ beneficial
วิธีใช้ uMatrix
Interface ค่อนข้าง overwhelming
มาดู top-down, left-right cogwheel เล็กเปิด settings menu (dashboard) ไม่อย่างชัดแตทำงาน เข้าถึง settings ผ่าน Add-ons window ได้
Blue cell เรียก scope selector เลือก loaded domains ทำ adjustments (permanent) ตามใจ ช่วย manage ง่ายขึ้น Default แสดง domain ที่ browse ไป และ switch subdomains ได้ถ้ามี
Power button toggle matrix filtering on/off - technically allow block หรือ allow all elements สำหรับ domain ใน blue cell ด้านซ้าย Three vertical dots button activate extra privacy options เช่น user agent และ referrer spoofing และ strict HTTPS ตัวใหญ่ไม่ต้องใช้
ปุ่มที่สามจากซ้าย (padlock symbol) commit temporary changes การเปลี่ยนแปลงใน fields ใดๆ สำหรับ selected domain ใน blue cell Eraser icon revert temporary permissions กลับ default state
Reload button reload page หลังปรับ permissions จัด Shift button bypass browser cache บางครั้งจำเป็นต้องทำ
Big back icon global revert button revert all temporary changes สำหรับ all domains ใน matrix หาก bungle up หรือ lost พยายามโหลดหน้า คลิกที่นี่ หรือ restart browser แตปวดหัว
Icon สุดท้ายเปิด log console ดู errors และ warnings ถ้า care technical side
Top row ของ table list categories ของ elements allow/block และเป็น global toggle คลิก cells นี้ element ใดๆ เช่น script หรือ media action นั้น apply ลง column ทั้งหมด เหมือน NoScript ควบคุม media, script, frames, other instructions และ cookies, images, CSS คล้ายกันมาก NoScript list WebGL และ fonts แยก
Second row ให้ apply permissions ให้ 1st-party domain entries only แทน entire column useful ถ้าอยาก apply scripts ให้ site ที่ visit แต่ไม่จำเป็น all third-party junk, ad domains, cloud domains ฯลฯ
State แสดง CSS และ images allowed สำหรับ all และ scripts สำหรับ 1st-party only
Row ต่อๆ ไป domain names listed เริ่มจาก site ที่ visit และทุกอย่างที่โหลด แต่ละ cell list จำนวน elements match category เช่น 3 images, 1 CSS file, 1 script
Red, gold และ green
uMatrix ใช้ color coding ช่วยแยก toggle states ของแต่ละ cell มี accessibility option สำหรับ color blind Pale red และ pale green แสดง permanent block และ allow ตามลำดับ Temporary permissions สีเดียวแต intensity มากกว่า bright red และ bright green
คลิก cell ที่ไหนก็ได้ switch ระหว่าง states ที่อยากได้ หรือถ้า hand มือเก่ง คลิก top vertical half ของ cell allow bottom half block element นี้ จะ save time คลิกสุ่มจนได้ state/color ที่อยาก

ผมเริ่มเล่น uMatrix เยี่ยมเว็บต่างๆ ดูว่าทำงานดีแค่ไหน As expected ด้วย 1st-party domains blocked คล้าย NoScript fine-tune permissions บางกรณีต้องหลาย iterations temporary allow actions จน domains ทั้งหมดโหลด อาจต้อง shift reload domain ทั้งหมด despite nerdy nature และ busy interface ทำงาน as expected
บางครั้งต้อง bypass browser cache และ load third-party scripts เพื่อ functionality ที่จำเป็น
