Well first should never rush updating system should wait at least month let others play ignoble role Charge of the Light Brigade then once issues solved update without fearing problems advocated this approach forever turns out Build 1809 update proved me more than right released so many issues modern software thingie right Microsoft actually paused update while before restoring it still three months down road still didn't have it but getting ahead ourselves
Playing around
Not done much testing Windows 10 recently mostly because didn't feel value bother whole endeavor updates would always take hours one two settings undone whole buzz doesn't bring practical advantage table desktops should be quiet calm so focus actual work not waste life maintaining fighting system
Pending retirement Windows Phone still remains best designed mobile UI all time whole experiment feels ever sadder before all noise apps convergence no glorious end then Edge going Chromium engine thingie even worse shall all pay dearly one day remember always cheer underdog Linux desktop and that was Microsoft mobile space in ten years wish you've heeded my advice
But did decide see what gives Build 1809 after all check if any good changes after all one day might have to migrate this OS need prepared in advance against surprises limit freedom or insult intelligence or both
Anyway powered Windows 10 system let it update meanwhile checked some settings options great surprise update relatively quick only about 15 minutes well Microsoft did promise working making updates fast (again) maybe this was that?
No proved just ordinary set of patches still wasn't being offered 1809 release talking end January three months later at this point decided grab Media Creator tool run in-vivo well tool complained couldn't run under standard account (even if elevate privileges) had log into Administrator account do everything fresh twenty minutes life wasted time takes complete entire update cycle Windows 7/8 and here haven't even started
Annoyances
Before talk process let me tell few brief things pre-upgrade experience should start reading Build 1804 review typically remove most so-called modern apps Windows 10 because don't use them touchy design inferior desktop tools every way not single mobile application entire universe no matter who wrote it somehow some way superior classic desktop counterparts on desktop
But even monthly cumulative patch thingie annoying enough restored modern apps after deleted them such pesty behavior like having rash y' know mean desperation first class then as mentioned earlier settings WERE CHANGED like Contacts just sad
Apps wise Windows 10 also warned opening executable not originated from store easily disable that settings but then wouldn't problem if store actually had all software need or not needed using online account use it kind of cyclic issue here
Then tried open PDF file got this:
What? Since when browser PDF tool? why retire own tool? ah well
Moreover Windows Update Medic on and WU service on disabled them nice good again another example things done user's system against explicit choice if only word some sort IT security industry phrase describe piece code makes changes user's machine against their choice hm oh that's right all in EULA so fine all your kidney belong to us
Manual upgrade
Signed into Administrator account almost destroyed laptop from anger first ten or so minutes system almost unusable all sorts "modern" stuff running slowing things down ruining experience slowly killed processes services things went back semi-normal but still slow frustrating session installed IrfanView image viewer Windows 10 reset file associations back to Photos because this crap behavior still ongoing 2019
No problem. I just want to use a superior program.
No, I won't use Photos. EVER. EEEEEEEEVEEEEER. Once you make light fast app equals IrfanView capabilities might or then again won't because forever remember resent this little game permissions you did there so won't ever bother trying your modern apps on my desktop ever
Sorted nonsense App defaults deleted every single modern app could — have do separately each user it seems disabled even more unnecessary services started upgrade give chance see how many choices "respected" after upgrade
Took 27 minutes Windows 10 from Media Creator launch to actual update 27 minutes still nothing really happened just noise this progress ladies gentlemen this future not just Microsoft but every single software company out there in twenty years truly deeply wish computer never invented
Then left machine be went write this thing glanced screen 74% progress after 45 minutes so ignoring monthly updates inability run Creator tool under standard account cost another 35-40 minutes was 1 hour 15 minutes into upgrade process only three quarters done guessing few reboots post-upgrade configurations too so much wasted time
The waiting game
Eventually full 100% mark happened 15 minutes later after that two reboots total 36 minutes performing upgrade so faster than Build 1804 but still awful lot of time then after logging in waited another five minutes user-specific setup complete all in all more than two hours get upgrade done two hours
What has changed?
Before working session asked choose whether enable voice service text and ink service advertising ID few other online-ish options kind thing new user would set up why asked these questions upgraded system uses local account? attempt get me somehow "approve" these different online-ad-happy things who came up idea aggressive marketing actually endear users effective long run?
Then lot services disabled back on running including Windows Defender Telemetry Xbox and Windows Update itself without repeating simply disrespectful end user no other word
You shall not pass!
App wise seems most items back now mind not all so improvement but again still puzzling why Microsoft keeps insisting installing touch-optimized software desktop especially when people use local account considering fact retiring phone moreover these apps don't really offer same value many third-party software finally some software cannot removed through settings menu although can Powershell them out of existence
Using Build 1809
Now started actually testing new build what offers first glance does not seem any difference which good then again just spent two hours not able use machine so what's point
Logins relatively slow whole bunch stuff happening like indexing such disk quite busy not sure why but still infinitely better than observed under Admin account which hasn't undergone as much rinsing as this one also noticed process named Cortana in task manager but have it disabled sort of spurious one because search coupled with AI thingie even if second part not running still see it
New features
Lot of stuff frank most not make much sense most people don't mind new features but not when come expanse stability performance all colorful extras like Game bar VR casting such could all offered downloadable modules people want enhance experience hell even offer through store!
Instead one-size-fits-all simply creates unnecessary noise if look Windows 7 or 8 don't really lack anything modern-day computing except hardware drivers fine don't mind improvements front at all reasoning switch XP to 7 indeed much better 64-bit support but wasn't and isn't really anything application side things
Security
Revamped security center find naming convention change confusing although new overview layout easier understand than past however too many Windows Defender components most aren't related one another Exploit protection sits under Apps control bit harder locate than before but that's killer feature want focus if really keen security rest creates sense urgency activity but doesn't cardinally contribute anything even so all said think Microsoft's approach security better than typically get third-party software
Search & regedit
Menu search looks nicer more functional than before get more details fine-tune search if use online recommendations get ever more information provided comfortable this mode use but even offline side refined quite nicely regedit also comes with hive path auto-complete helps navigate registry faster
Clipboard
Praised Plasma having smart sophisticated clipboard Windows 10 finally gotten one but do need explicitly allow this one also comes with online integration now here's something might actually be useful appreciate fact this one isn't running default need turn on why this isn't case three dozen other apps beats me
Some options are missing for me
Not sure if Home/Pro thing or not having online account limits changes things but didn't see some options mentioned release notes instance had no option start Linux shell anywhere even though running WSL didn't see all different security settings ought to be available (like Application Guard) don't mind just wonder what factor leads divergence final product different users
Other things
Kiosk biometrics dark theme some people may find quite useful personally don't like dark themes except phone (Windows Phone perfect like that) so might be nod toward developers alike also tried Storage Sense cleanup manually fast did good job
Beyond that remains same operating system took lot effort taming back baseline expect once in that state behaves reliably predictably solid performance good battery life solid-ish ergonomics shame about all wasted energy trying make me low-IQ person no good reason not hard check if user running online account for instance or maybe ask user if interested changes now that would be revolutionary

Build 1803 first Windows update ever had big glitches errors then Build 1809 came went came back never actually got it sign clear deterioration quality Microsoft's software used to be stuff legends rock solid guess another old truth got eroded another scar soul added
Aggressive push use online stuff just sad doesn't even make sense anymore while Windows Phone still existed bless my Lumia cross-platform connectivity actually something worth exploring didn't quite work out but had its place was logic to it now practically desktop-only stuff really no value any these things only real outcome outcry resentment techies feeling deeply antagonized by these changes perception intrusive wrongness starting resonate even ordinary users know Microsoft's future entirely cloud services office but eroding thirty years desktop wrong
Once again after done stripping away low-IQ noise under all unnecessary glamor Windows 10 isn't bad after all doesn't have cardinal advantages over Windows 7/8 but works reasonably well big problem knowledge if do update system will have waste time re-fixing things exercise despair futility and would seem that is our future all in all Build 1809 ain't bad but ain't special either just average take care
